Lesson 1

Discovering Jesus in the Gospel of Luke is a Christ-centered Bible learning course designed to guide participants through a thoughtful and prayerful study of the Gospel of Luke. Luke’s Gospel, often called the “Gospel of the Son of Man,” presents a unique portrait of Jesus that emphasizes His compassion, inclusiveness, and mission to save the lost. This course invites students to encounter Jesus personally, not only as a historical figure, but as the living Savior who calls each believer into a transformative relationship.
Luke is studied as a Spirit-inspired narrative that reveals God’s plan of salvation, highlighting Jesus’ humanity and divinity, His ministry of healing and teaching, His sacrificial death, and His victorious resurrection. Students will see how Luke portrays Jesus as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy, the promised Messiah who came to “seek and save the lost” (Luke 19:10).
Throughout the study, attention is given to Luke’s focus on the marginalized—women, children, Gentiles, the poor, and sinners—reflecting the conviction that the gospel is for every nation, tribe, tongue, and people (Revelation 14:6). Luke’s accounts of parables such as the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son will be explored as illustrations of God’s grace and call to live a life of compassionate service.
The course will also highlight Luke’s emphasis on prayer, the Holy Spirit, and the joy of discipleship. From Jesus’ prayer life to the Spirit’s guidance in His ministry, participants will see that the same Spirit who empowered Christ is promised to believers today to equip them for witness and holy living. Sanctification will be presented as an ongoing work of grace through the indwelling Spirit.
Special attention will be given to the way Luke structures his Gospel to lead readers toward the cross and the resurrection. The cross is the supreme revelation of God’s love, and the resurrection assures believers of victory over sin and death. The closing chapters of Luke also point forward to the blessed hope—the second coming of Jesus—when God’s plan of redemption will be fully realized.
In addition to Bible study, the course will encourage practical application. Participants will be invited to reflect on how the life and teachings of Jesus can shape their personal walk with God, their relationships, and their mission in the world. Each lesson will include opportunities for prayer, personal reflection, and group discussion, fostering both spiritual growth and fellowship.
By the end of Discovering Jesus in the Gospel of Luke, students will have a richer understanding of who Jesus is, what He accomplished, and what it means to follow Him today. They will be equipped to share the good news with others, living out the call to be Christ’s witnesses “to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). Ultimately, this course seeks to lead participants into a deeper love for the Savior and a renewed commitment to His mission in anticipation of His soon return.
